Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to Evolve Counseling Group. We know that starting therapy can feel like a big step, and you likely have questions about what to expect. Below are answers to the most common questions we receive.
Getting Started
How do I know if therapy is right for me? Therapy is a valuable tool for anyone navigating life transitions, managing stress, or looking to understand themselves better. If you feel "stuck," overwhelmed, or simply want a dedicated space to focus on your personal growth, therapy can help.
How do I book my first session? You can schedule an initial consultation by filling out our contact form on our website. A therapist will reach out to you within 24-48 hours and start the process of scheduling an appointment.
What happens during the first session? The first session is an "intake" appointment. We’ll discuss your history, what brings you to therapy now, and what your goals are. It’s also a time for you to see if you feel comfortable with your therapist’s style.
Logistics & Investment
How long are the sessions? Standard individual sessions are 50 minutes long. This is often referred to as a "therapeutic hour."
Do you accept insurance? We are in network with several major insurance plans: Aetna, CareFirst BCBS, Cigna/Evernorth, Johns Hopkins Healthcare, United Healthcare/Optum. If we are out-of-network with your insurance plan, we can provide you with a "Superbill" that you can submit for potential reimbursement.
What is your cancellation policy? We require 24 hours' notice for cancellations. This allows us to offer that time slot to another client who may be waiting for an appointment. Late cancellations or no-shows require payment of the full session fee.
The Process
How long will I need to be in therapy? There is no "one size fits all" answer. Some clients find relief in a few months of short-term, goal-oriented work, while others prefer long-term therapy for deeper exploration. We will check in regularly to discuss your progress and how much longer you’d like to continue.
Is what I say confidential? Yes. Your privacy is a priority. Everything shared in our sessions is confidential, with a few legal exceptions (such as if there is a risk of imminent harm to yourself or others). We will review these privacy policies in detail during your first visit.
What if I don't feel like my therapist is a good fit? The "therapeutic alliance" is the most important factor in successful therapy. If you don't feel a connection with your therapist, we encourage you to speak up. We won't take it personally; our goal is your growth, and we are happy to help you transition to another clinician who might be a better match.
Specialized Care
Do you offer virtual or in-person sessions? We offer both! We provide secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions for residents of Maryland, as well as in-person appointments at our Columbia, MD office.
What age groups do you work with? Our group specializes in adults, teens, and couples. Please check our "Team" page to see which clinician's expertise matches your needs.
